SUMMARY:13 Feb 2015: 'Biochar: the new black gold'
DESCRIPTION:Are you at a loss about how to dispose of woody garden waste sustainably? Turn the problem into a solution: make biochar. Biochar has many amazing benefits for soil health\, plant production and not least climate change mitigation! It is the new black gold. This talk will cover the properties and benefits of biochar\, how to make it yourself\, and how to use it as a soil amendment. One lucky person will be able to take home a backyard biochar maker.\nDr Johan Swinnen is a life-long organic gardener with a degree in agronomy and a PhD in soil carbon dynamics. He is about to start aid work in Cambodia related to sustainable agriculture and permaculture. (More information on Biochar can be found on Johan’s on-line album http://tinyurl.com/pew6nbb) This talk will be hosted by St George/Sutherland Group on  Friday evening 7.00 pm 13 Feb 2015.  For members this will be a gold coin donation and for visitors $10.  All are welcome.  Please let Nat know  by emailing her at permaculturestgeorge@gmail.com if you will be attending. \nA very hot and fast burn using small twigs \n

SUMMARY:10 Oct 2014: Bokashi Composting
DESCRIPTION:Revolutionise the way you think about composting. Using an organic fermentation process\, the Bokashi Bin recycles all your domestic kitchen waste into valuable soil conditioner. Bokashi is a method of recycling food waste that uses fermentation in an anaerobic environment to pickle the waste (a bit like sauerkraut!) and prevent it from smelling bad while the container is filled. Each time scraps are added to the container\, a handful of Bokashi (grain inoculated with microorganisms) is sprinkled over the surface. When the container is full the Bokashi is buried (for example in a garden bed) or added to a compost bin where it will break down very quickly due to the pre-digestion during fermentation.. \nSt George will be hosting a presentation on Bokashi Composting on 10 October 2014 – 7pm – 9pm.  Alanna Audus will be presenting and will explain what bokashi is\, how it works and how to set up your own system.  There will be no charge for Permaculture St George/Sutherland members.  Visitors will pay $5.00 collected at the door. Venue is Edith Wellington Hall\, 76 Pitt Street\, MORTDALE.  If you would like to attend this presentation please let Nat know through the St George facebook page.

SUMMARY:12 Sept 2014: Waste Not - Want Not
DESCRIPTION:Why compost? \nOver one million people live in the southern Sydney region and every year each person generates about one tonne of waste. That’s about the same height and width as a family car. The more rubbish we generate\, the more landfill we create. This can contribute to environmental problems such as the greenhouse effect and water pollution. \nThe good news is that 30% of domestic waste is food materials and 25% of domestic waste is garden materials. Both can be easily composted into a rich source of nutrients and fertiliser giving you a better garden\, a healthier planet and the reduction in household waste. \nSO DON’T THROW IT IN THE BIN\, THROW IT IN THE COMPOST AND START REAPING THE BENEFITS OF HOME COMPOSTING. \nThis workshop is being run by St George/Sutherland Group on Friday 12 Sept starting at 7 pm at Senior Citizens Hall\, 76 Pitt Street\, Mortdale.  Please let Nat know if you are attending via the St George facebook page. \n  \n

SUMMARY:8 Aug 2014: Bud Citrus Grafting
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to graft citrus at Permaculture St George this Friday. Presented by the very knowledgeable Jennifer Baxter\, we will look at how to maximise the output and cropping period of your existing citrus trees by adding other citrus fruits – add lime to lemon\, add tangelo to orange. \nLearn the simple and effective skill of bud grafting. \nBring a plate of food or snacks to share with others. If you have cuttings\, seedlings or produce from your garden to share\, feel free to share them as well. \nYour family\, friends and significant others are welcome.
