SUMMARY:13 February 2024 Intro to Permaculture - Session 1
DESCRIPTION:Session 1. \nThis series of Intro to Permaculture is presented on behalf of Permaculture Sydney South. What is permaculture? How did it start? How do you design your home and garden using strategies derived from permaculture principles. \nFor our first session\, we will share our definitions of permaculture and discuss it’s origins. Yes\, bring your own definition. \nBut most importantly\, we will address in detail the design techniques to help make sense of the many options available in your garden layout. \nRather than randomly deciding what goes where\, these tools will give you confidence in making the complex decisions for a sensible design that is harmonious and highly productive. \nThis session will be followed by a visit to Matt’s home (by those who attend this session) so that you can see the practical results of following these permaculture principles. \nThe session starts at 7pm sharp Tuesday evening 13 February 2024. All sessions are part of your membership.  Casual attendance is welcome for a $10 fee.

SUMMARY:September 12 2023 Mandala Gardens by Galia Nikoleava
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of Permaculture Sydney South\, Galia Nikoleava will be taking us on a journey to discover the benefits of using a mandala garden. \n“In permaculture\, garden design emphasizes patterns of landscape\, function\, and species assemblies. With an eye on where elements can go to maximize a system’s benefits\, the central concept of permaculture is not on each separate element\, but on the relationships created among elements by the way they are placed together.”    \nMandala gardens capitalize on this connection\, both with the connection between components and the synergy of the final design.  The whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts. \nPermaculture design minimizes waste\, human labor\, and energy input. The circular shape of the mandala garden provides visual interest and accessibility. The application of mulch and compost provides the basis for a no-dig garden while also leaving your soil biota undisturbed.   It is the microbes and billions of bacteria that do the heavy lifting in increasing soil fertility. \nWant to learn more? Come to my Mandala Garden presentation! \nOatley Community Hall\, 61 Oatley Avenue\, Oatley \n7pm   Tuesday 12 September 2023 \nCost: $5 for non-members\, free for members \nCasual attendance welcome at all presentations held on behalf of Permaculture Sydney South

SUMMARY:July 11 2023 Straw Bale & No Dig Gardens by Nada Malkoc & Matt Heffernan
DESCRIPTION:Permaculture Sydney South is happy to host: Straw Bale & No-Dig Gardens   by Nada Malkoc & Matt Heffernan \nStraw bale and No dig gardens are a novel way to plant vegetables in your garden. One involves planting directly into the strawbale itself while No Dig Gardens are a way to prepare a new garden without digging into your existing soil but instead\, building up the bed with layers of different organic material such as branches\, manure\, lucerne\, leaves etc. \nThe concept of “no dig garden” was documented by Esther Dean in the 1970’s. Her popular book “No Dig Gardening and Leaves for Life” is still available and relevant. \nNada Malkoc will present the topic as she has used these methods for many years and has found both to be very successful. Matt Heffernan will also assist in the presentation. \nPlease join us for our July meeting to learn more about the methods and results in detail. \nOatley Community Hall\, 61 Oatley Avenue\, Oatley \n7pm   Tuesday 11 July 2023 \nCost: $5 for non-members\, free for members.  Casual attendance welcome to all events hosted by Permaculture Sydney South

SUMMARY:May 9 2023 Building a Thriving School Garden by Patricia Waskiw

Her Lebanese grandfather had a huge garden block that fed his family and the surrounding Lebanese community\, whilst her Scottish grandfather had a more modest\, but beautiful veggie and flower garden.  As a young’un\, Patricia proudly recalls her father digging her a little plot in their own backyard where she planted her first crop… radishes! \nShe was always going to be a gardener! \nPatricia has been teaching young students for 40 years and is currently teaching at Panania Public School. The school garden there is a thriving and happy place where the students engage in sustainable garden practices during the lunchtime ‘Garden Club’ and also during daily class lessons. \nPlease join us to hear more about the valuable lessons being shared in the school garden with her (many) wonderful students. \nOatley Community Hall\, 61 Oatley Avenue\, Oatley  7pm   Tuesday 9 May 2023 \nCost: $5 for non-members\, free for members \nCasual attendance welcome
