DESCRIPTION:About the Workshop \nIn this short presentation + workshop\, we will be exploring the origins of ‘seed balls’ and the benefits to our local community and environment through this practice.  We will also discuss reasons why you might like to adopt this practice as part of your permaculture journey. \nIn this workshop\, we will go through the recipe for making seed balls and you will get to make some of your own to take home with you.  Please join us for a fun evening of getting your hands dirty and supporting your local environment. \nBio:  Stacey’s interest in permaculture began well over ten years ago when she began researching the benefits of herbs for her eye health.  This led to her discovering organic ‘No Dig’ gardening and\, as her passion for permaculture ignited\, to finally begin her studies in Permaculture Design and Teaching.  She now works part-time as Community Manager for Morag Gamble at the Permaculture Education Institute and loves her role in supporting and encouraging students from around the globe to also become designers and teachers.  Stacey also volunteers for the permaculture charity Ethos Foundation which supports refugees in East Africa to become permaculture teachers in their communities \nOatley Community Hall\, 61 Oatley Avenue\, Oatley \n7pm   Tuesday 11 October 2022 \nCost: $5 for non-members\, free for members

DESCRIPTION:Green Connect employs young people and former refugees to do environmental work including reducing waste and growing fair food. Last year Green Connect employed 111 young people and former refugees\, kept 157 tonnes of waste out of landfill and grew and distributed more than 35\,000 kg of fair food from their award-winning farm. The Green Connect Farm is an 11-acre oasis in the middle of suburbia\, growing more than 90 different fruit\, vegetables and herbs using permaculture and organic principles\, and offers tours and workshops to allow people to connect with and learn about where food comes from. Green Connect’s definition of “fair food” is food that is good for people who grow it (fair wages and good jobs)\, good for people who eat it (healthy and nutritious) and good for the planet (regenerating the land and minimising environmental impacts including food waste and food miles). \nKylie Flament is the General Manager of Green Connect. Kylie moved from an HR and strategy career in the corporate sector into management roles at the two children’s hospitals in Sydney before relocating with her young family to Wollongong where she took up the role of General Manager at not-for-profit social enterprise Green Connect – one she describes as having to be a human Swiss army knife\, using every business and community development skill in her toolkit.   \nThis presentation will be in the Oatley Community Hall \nTuesday 14 June 2022 7 – 9 pm \nFree to members. DESCRIPTION:Gracie is completing a PhD at UNSW Sydney and the Australian Museum\, where she is researching how human-driven habitat modification affects frogs using citizen science and field data. She also works at the Australian Museum and has identified thousands of frog calls submitted to the citizen science app\, FrogID – Australia’s first national frog count. \nGracie will be talking about FrogID\, what we’ve learnt from this data\, and how you can help inform frog conservation. SUMMARY:12 April 2022:  Water Smarter with Low Cost\, Highly Efficient Irrigation by Nevin Sweeney NOW BY ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we will be talking about using water in the garden more efficiently including hints on water conservation\, water wise fruit\, vegetables and herbs and hints for growing in containers more water efficiently. We will also be discussing a number of highly efficient but low cost irrigation techniques such as buried clay pots (ollas) and porous capsules; deep pipe\, buried pipe and porous hoses\, the use of wicks\, including wicking bottles\, self-watering pots and wicking beds. We will also have a DIY olla construction workshop. So join us if you can! \nTo make your own Olla\, bring along \n-Two terracotta pots which are the same size and do not have any waterproof coating in or outside the pot (I find the Bunnings $4 pots work well) \n-It can be handy to be able to sand the top lip of the pot so some sandpaper and a bit of flat plywood or something to mount it on. The sanding activity can be omitted. \n-Then it is just a case of having some silicone (I use the wet area silicone tubes.) \nThis presentation will be a Zoom presentation.  Link will be sent to members or by arrangement prior to presentation date.

SUMMARY:8 March 2022: The Benefits of Being Involved in Your Community Garden by Sofia Carvajal
DESCRIPTION:Sofia had always wanted to grow vegetables\, so she joined Hurstville Community Garden. She fell in love with gardening as she found it a radical and magical process of watching food grow before your eyes.  The food is organic\, fresh and the best tasting she had ever cooked. Not to mention seasonal and with a low carbon footprint.  Six months later\, she was nominated as the next president of the Hurstville community garden. \nSofia initially balked\, as she never been in a community leadership position before. But slowly she came to remember an old quote. “Somebody should do something about that. Then I realised I am somebody.” \nIn this talk\, Sofia will talk about how anyone can be a community leader and the benefits of being part of community-building and outreach programs at a local garden. Gardens are a wonderful place where many generations and cultures meet\, grow\, share\, swap and build resilience in numbers. Community gardens grow food\, friendships and networks\, strengthening bonds\, encouraging mental health exercise and a healthy lifestyle. \nThe community garden is also an excellent hub for councils\, local groups\, schools and networks to form\, grow and share resources and ideas: the possibilities are endless. \nThere has been a last minute change to this meeting.  It will now be a ZOOM presentation.  The link will be sent out to all financial members prior to the meeting.

SUMMARY:22 February 2022:  Working with community to better understand potential contaminant risks in urban gardens by Professor Mark Patrick Taylor
DESCRIPTION:This talk with cover the primary findings of the VegeSafe soils contaminants program Professor Taylor\, EPA Victoria’s Chief Environmental Scientist\, has completed with his graduate team. The talk will cover not only trace metals in soils in our backyard\, but examine what this means for vegetables\, honey bees and chickens along with the likely sources and causes of contamination and practical solutions. \nBrief Biography – Professor Mark Patrick Taylor Mark Patrick Taylor is Victoria’s Chief Environmental Scientist at EPA Victoria…Prior to his current position he specialised in environmental contamination and the risks it can pose. Recent successful science-based advocacy includes the revision of the NHMRC’s intervention level for blood lead exposures in children and the need for better regulation of smelter air emissions in Port Pirie. He has completed several commissions for government in recent years: (i) a review of the NSW EPA’s management of contaminated sites for the NSW Minister for the Environment\, focussing on perfluorinated chemicals (PFAS) and their management; (ii) a review of lead in plumbing fittings and materials for the Australian Building Codes Board; (iii) a science review for NSW EPA’s Broken Hill Environmental Lead Program regarding childhood lead exposures. \nProf Taylor is a science advisor to the following: the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation represent-ing the Mirrar people impacted by uranium mining in Kakadu; Fire Rescue Victoria\, the Broken Hill Environmental Lead Program addressing childhood lead exposures from mining operations. His research program investigates environmental contamination in aerosols\, dusts\, sediments\, soil\, water and potential risks to human health. His work has focused on mining and smelting emissions and depositions\, as well as contamination in urban environments.  Prof Taylor’s work has a special focus on ‘human environments’ including analysis of blood lead levels in children\, firefighter chemical exposures\, trace metals in wine\, honey\, residential veggie patches\, household dusts and drinking water. Topical research includes assessment of atmospheric trace metal emissions from wildfires. His research and outreach work includes Australia’s only citizen science programs that addresses environmental contamination in residential environments: VegeSafe and DustSafe programs\, which provide soil and indoor dust trace metal analysis and advice to homeowners. \nThis will e a zoom presentation open to financial members only.  Presentation will commence at 7 pm on 22 February 2022.  Link will be sent out prior to event to all members.

DESCRIPTION:HOW PLANTS AND SOIL FEED EACH OTHER by Matt Heffernan \nThe science of soil is having a renaissance. Our knowledge of the complexities of plant and soil relationships are still being discovered and understood. \nThousands of chemical compounds are made by plants that feed the soil microbes. The soil biology in turn makes thousands of chemicals for plants. The role of bacteria\, fungi and archaea in the rhizosphere (topsoil) and their importance to human gut health is like a new frontier with so much still not known. \nJoin Matt Heffernan as he tries to simplify these relationships and how to encourage it in your home garden and how important it is for humanity on many levels. \nIt was hoped that this first presentation for the year would be held in the Oatley Community Hall.  Unfortunately due to the unpredictability of the recent Covid-19 outbreak\, we have decided to commence the year with a zoom presentation.  The link for this presentation will be sent out prior to the meeting to all financial members.

Whilst Sonia is a busy parent who works full time\, her love for community and her vision for a more sustainable Sutherland Shire continues to motivate her in the volunteer work she is presently undertaking at The Wheel. \nThe Wheel is a Sustainability hub that aims to encourage and support Sutherland Shire residents in living a more sustainable lifestyle. The Wheel’s first major project is bringing a Library of Things to our local community. \nWhat is a Library of Things? – It seems almost a universal experience\, walking into your garage to stumble upon a plethora of rarely used tools\, sports equipment\, and other appliances. These items have spent the majority of their life comfortably sitting on a shelf\, collecting dust\, having been used once or twice. Why buy these things when you can borrow them? \nA library of things is just like a regular library but instead of books you can borrow tools\, equipment and other useful things. I have been fooling around with mushroom kits for years (the good\, the bad and the ugly) with variable results but certainly have some tips and tricks to help you get a better yield. DESCRIPTION:Bokashi is a quick and alternative way of composting food waste thru an ‘anaerobic fermentation’ process which introduces microorganisms to organic matter and ferments it.  On Tuesday evening Stacey English will take us through the process of setting up your own Bokashi composting system. \nThis closed system is a perfect composting solution for those with limited space in the garden; allows you to include a wider variety of food waste and adds additional beneficial microorganisms into your soil. \nThis workshop will introduce you to the benefits and uses of Bokashi composting; take you thru the steps of composting in this way\, and show you how you can make your own Bokashi bin. \nVisitors  welcome – $10 casual fee/ free to financial members. 7.00 pm start \n \n

Building on the knowledge acquired while growing up on a farm in Italy\, Diego introduces people to the ever-present food and medicine plants that surround us. He collaborates extensively with herbalists\, chefs environmentalists & cultural workers promoting a new understanding of what the environment has to offer. Diego works with councils and institutions to provide content for community engagement projects. You see weeds\, Diego sees food. \nThe Wonderful World of Weeds: history\, ecology and recipes \nWeeds are everywhere\, unavoidably. Weeds are our co-evolutionary species\, many of them following human’s footsteps as we expanded from North East Africa and roamed the world.These plants are our botanical closest relatives. SUMMARY:30 March 2021: "Bees in the burbs" (By Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:The media is dominated by the yellow and black Apis mellifera\, yet in Australia this is an introduced\, and even invasive species. We have an incredible diversity of native bees\, yet they are under-represented\, and their conservation needs are little publicised. Join native bee conservation biologist Kit Prendergast as she covers native bees\, their biology\, ecology\, and how we can make a real difference to their conservation. \nKit Prendergast is a native bee scientist and conservation biologist\, dedicated to promoting evidence-based actions to preserve indigenous native bees. She earned a Forrest Scholarship for her Ph.D. research documenting native bee biodiversity in the southwest Western Australian biodiversity hotspot. She created a Facebook group ‘Bees in the burbs’ which now has almost over 9K members\, and has conducted citizen science projects to engage the community to care about native bees and ensure that there are thriving bee communities. Kit was awarded the Flow Hive Pollinator Support Program\, Graduate Women WA Mary Walters Bursary\, Australian Wildlife Society University Student Grants Scheme and the Ecological Society of Australia’s Outstanding Outreach Prize\, and was a FameLab Australia finalist. She’s been invited to speak at community events and has published numerous academic articles. Kit has also written the popular book ‘Creating a Haven for Native Bees.’ \nThe zoom link for this presentation will only be available to financial members.  It will be sent out prior to the presentation.

DESCRIPTION:Join Matt Heffernan for our first evening back in the Oatley Community Hall since March 2020. He will give a general background on building or purchasing a chicken tractor as well as a detailed report of his personal experience in running this system from his own garden. \nChicken Tractors are designed to make your chicken keeping experience simple for you\, and safe for your chickens. While you are providing your chickens with a safe and delicious habitat\, they will repay you by becoming an integral part of your garden maintenance and pest management system. \nChicken tractors can be a fantastic way to prepare a vegetable garden for planting. \n\nThey can be incorporated into a rotation system over a number of beds\, moving from one to the other as required\nThey can also be moved under fruit trees\nChickens will fertilize and till the soil\, remove weeds (to a point) and eliminate pests like fruit fly eggs\nVisitors are welcome for a casual attendance fee of $10.  There is no charge for financial members.

Yerrabingin is a visionary start-up that seeks to disrupt conventional approaches to ending Indigenous disadvantage and create intercultural opportunities for future generations to thrive. \nWith over 20 years of experience working in Indigenous Cultural Heritage\, Christian sought to walk a new path by interweaving collaborative design thinking and Indigenous knowledge. Yerrabingin has become a leading force in the commercial design industry by delivering environmentally conscious native landscapes and place-making designs enriched with Indigenous narratives.

SUMMARY:8 October 2019: Wicking Beds & Straw Bale Beds
DESCRIPTION:This month we present you with 2 very different garden bed designs.  We look at the pros and cons of wicking beds and straw bale garden beds.  If you are short of space or just have poor quality soil these two alternatives may provide you with a gardening solution. \nJulie will share with you exactly what a wicking bed is and why you would go to the trouble of setting one up? Is it gardening by the full moon\, or does it require a broomstick? See a simple small scale demonstration and think of the possibilities.  Do you have a balcony\, space under the deck\, a hard surface\, an indoor area or rocky yard just crying out for a veggie patch? Are you away for days at a time and wish you could sustain a garden?  If the answer is yes\, then this is one to consider for you! \nNada will share with you her experience of straw bale garden beds.  Like wicking beds\, these can be set up anywhere you have some spare space.  Straw is the ideal low cost container for garden beds.  As the straw breaks down it will provide the perfect medium for growing vegetables.  Nada will explain the process in setting up the straw bales and the different layering and watering required before planting.  This is a much slower process than setting up a wicking bed as each step requires time before you proceed to the next step.  However\, it does have a much lower outlay cost. \n \nVisitors  welcome – $10 casual fee/ free to financial members. \n

DESCRIPTION:Nevin Sweeney and family have been living sustainably on their 600m2 block in the suburb of St Clair for many years\, growing and preserving food\, harvesting water\, being energy efficient and minimising waste. Armed with a Farm Technology Certificate\, Permaculture Design Certificate and Masters in OHS and Environmental Management under his belt\, Nevin is a wealth of information and we are lucky enough to have him share some of this with us. \nNevin will take us through the reasons and steps for making your own yoghurt and ricotta cheese. He will be talking about what yoghurt is and why you might want to make your own\, the types of yoghurt\, yoghurt starters\, yoghurt makers – electric\, non-electric and homemade – the yoghurt making process and what it can be used in. \nFor the fresh cheese section\, Nevin will be talking about why you might want to make your own fresh cheese\, what equipment you need\, what ingredients you need\, and the cheese-making process which will be followed by a demonstration of making ricotta cheese. \nVisitors  welcome – $10 casual fee/ free to financial members.

Aboriginal Australians have used indigenous plants for food and medicine for millennia.
