SUMMARY:10 March 2020: Sustainability Hub
DESCRIPTION:Jenni Phillipe will be sharing her personal and professional journey to reduce her impact on the planet.  She will bring to life the process she undertook\, the wins and the set-backs\, and will share tips and ideas on how to approach such drastic changes in life and how to sustain them. \n“Every day I am focused on improving my family’s footprint on the environment\, researching new ways of living\, sourcing and consuming. We extend the life of our belongings\, buying the absolute minimum and minimise impact on natural resources (less meat\, no palm oil…) We minimise our land-fill waste\, have introduced a compost bin\, built a greenhouse to grow our vegetables\, removed most single use plastics……. \nThe next ambition is changing our superannuation and bank to sustainable ones\, change our car to be electric\, continue towards a true zero waste lifestyle…… \nLast year I decided to quit my job and focus 100% on making this sustainability journey easier\, more convenient and more rewarding for individuals\, communities\, businesses and government. I have put my financial security on the line\, because I think sustainability is more important. I’m 9 months into the transition\, and I’m starting to get traction…..” \nEntry cost is free to all financial members of Permaculture Sydney South.  Visitors are welcome to attend with the casual fee of $10 to be collected at the door.  If you are interested in coming along or want more information  please contact permaculturesydneysouth@gmail.com.  The evening presentation will commence at 7.00 pm. \nIf you are interested in becoming a member please visit our “Becoming a member” page on this website \nMeetings are held at: \nOatley Community Hall  61 Oatley Avenue  OATLEY  NSW  2223

SUMMARY:11 February 2020; Permaculture & Water
DESCRIPTION:Of all the parts of our managed system\, water is probably the most important element we need to think about. \nFrom the early days of P.A Yeomans keyline through to Geoff Lawtons “Greening of the Desert” in Jordan\, Permaculture has emphasised water as an essential requirement that needs to be slowed\, trapped\, used and reused to our advantage. \nDuring a time of water scarcity\, join Matt Heffernan in presenting a Permaculture history through various case studies of sensitive water design. From the grand to local scale\, what are some of the simple and ingenious examples of water management out there and what should we be doing now to ensure water security into the future? \nEntry cost is free to all financial members of Permaculture Sydney South.  Visitors are welcome to attend with the casual fee of $10 to be collected at the door.  If you are interested in coming along or want more information  please contact permaculturestgeorge@gmail.com.  The evening presentation will commence at 7.00 pm. \nIf you are interested in becoming a member please visit our “Becoming a member” page on this website \nMeetings are held at: \nOatley Community Hall  61 Oatley Avenue  OATLEY  NSW  2223

SUMMARY:8 October 2019: Wicking Beds & Straw Bale Beds
DESCRIPTION:This month we present you with 2 very different garden bed designs.  We look at the pros and cons of wicking beds and straw bale garden beds.  If you are short of space or just have poor quality soil these two alternatives may provide you with a gardening solution. \nJulie will share with you exactly what a wicking bed is and why you would go to the trouble of setting one up? Is it gardening by the full moon\, or does it require a broomstick? See a simple small scale demonstration and think of the possibilities.  Do you have a balcony\, space under the deck\, a hard surface\, an indoor area or rocky yard just crying out for a veggie patch? Are you away for days at a time and wish you could sustain a garden?  If the answer is yes\, then this is one to consider for you! \nNada will share with you her experience of straw bale garden beds.  Like wicking beds\, these can be set up anywhere you have some spare space.  Straw is the ideal low cost container for garden beds.  As the straw breaks down it will provide the perfect medium for growing vegetables.  Nada will explain the process in setting up the straw bales and the different layering and watering required before planting.  This is a much slower process than setting up a wicking bed as each step requires time before you proceed to the next step.  However\, it does have a much lower outlay cost. \n \nVisitors  welcome – $10 casual fee/ free to financial members. \n

SUMMARY:9 July 2019: Maximizing Garden Resources & Yields
DESCRIPTION:Come and Join Permaculture Sydney South as we have an open discussion on clever and unique ways we are improving our site yields. Matthew Heffernan will start with a presentation on some of the novel ways he is adding value and still making changes to his 15 year old garden. \nThere is a suitable food plant for every corner of the garden. With so many choices\, it is a matter of selecting the right one. \n\nCreate a compact home garden orchard with a year round supply of fruits\nAre we maximising our water resources? We look at storage and irrigation techniques\nAre we recycling all our garden waste?\nAre we using our structures and vertical space?\nStoring produce over winter?\nMaking subtle (or not) use of the nature strip?\n\nAfter Matt’s presentation we invite you all to tell us your secrets that have paid off\, and perhaps some failures too.  \nVisitors  welcome – $10 casual fee/ free to financial members.

SUMMARY:12 March 2019: Weeds
DESCRIPTION:Matt Heffernan will discuss a site he has been trying to manage at Mollymook.  It has been left untouched for many years and weeds are proving to be a real problem.\nHe will run through the many organic strategies commonly used and will discuss both their positives and their negatives.  After six years the problem continues particularly as he only visits every 2 months. An automatic watering system is feeding the garden – which also includes the weeds!\nThe site is on heavy clay in full sun. Some vegetables are growing. The intention is to grow perennial vegetables like yucon and sweet potato as well as other vegetables suitable for storage such as pumpkin\, that can be picked and stored back in Sydney.  Maybe some bright ideas from guests could help? \nEntry cost is free to all financial members of Permaculture Sydney South.  Non-members are welcome to attend and will be charged $10 to be collected at the door.

SUMMARY:9 October 2018: Chickens in the Suburbs
DESCRIPTION:Chickens are an integral part of back yard sustainability.  At our next meeting Julie will talk about her recent experience with backyard chickens. She has 3 ISO Browns in her small yard for her and her husband. The weeding was making her back worse and there is a never ending need for more fertiliser and compost so Julie’s family built a pen around her design with second hand timber and the experiment started! Julie has done a few Permaculture courses and has a passion for backyard fruit and veg and eggs. She has retired from Nursing and loves her new pets. \nIf you are interested in back yard chickens then this is the opportunity to come along and hear/share first hand experiences of chickens.  Getting started\, new ideas\, problem solving\, different breeds and advice and all part of the evening. \nEntry cost is free to all financial members.  Non-members $10 to be collected at the door.  If you are interested in coming along or want more information and are not currently a member\, please contact permaculturestgeorge@gmail.com. \nBYO coffee mug\, bring snacks to share\, garden produce or seeds to swap \nPayment details for becoming a member are on our website.

SUMMARY:10 October 2017: Challenges in Land Development for Farming - Peter Hughes
DESCRIPTION:Having moved to our new property of 30 acres on the Central Coast in December 2016\, life has changed a lot for my family and I. Having been here for 10 months a lot has changed\, and the design has evolved.
