SUMMARY:10 October 2017: Challenges in Land Development for Farming - Peter Hughes
DESCRIPTION:Having moved to our new property of 30 acres on the Central Coast in December 2016\, life has changed a lot for my family and I. Completing the PDC (Permaculture Design Course) in 2016 I created a design for my property based on my new-found knowledge but without the observation and experience of being on the land. Having been here for 10 months a lot has changed\, and the design has evolved. I would like to share with everyone the journey in 2017 and how we are trying to follow the permaculture design principals on our land\, the challenges we have faced so far\, the challenges we have conquered and what we think lies ahead. \n\nEntry cost\, collection at the door:\nMembers- BYO coffee mug\, bring snacks to share\, garden produce or seeds to swap\nNon-members- $10 \nSign up or renew via our website http://www.permaculturesydneysouth.org.au/\nRenewal of annual membership (calendar year)- $25\nNew annual membership (calendar year)- $30 \nPresentation 7 – 8 pm\, networking 8 – 9 pm Tuesday 10 October 2017 \nNew venue! 61 Oatley Avenue Oatley (corner of Oatley Avenue and Neville Street) NSW. SUMMARY:10 February 2017: History of Australian Agriculture Since Colonisation
DESCRIPTION:The history of Australian agriculture has been full of challenges to say the least. Early European farmers tried to recreate an English farmscape\, they cleared too many trees and suffered from cyclical drought and erosion whilst knowing very little about the native foods. \nRecent improved knowledge of our weather and ecology has seen farmers replanting shelter belts\, windbreaks\, using strip grazing and other advances to work with the land. Matthew Heffernan will be taking us through the changing Australian farming landscape and showing how commercial land use\, both farming and grazing\, is changing to take into account environmental limitations and considerations. \nEntry cost\, collection at the door:\nMembers- bring snacks to share\, garden produce or seeds to swap\nNon-members- $10 \nEdith Wellington Hall 76 Pitt Street Mortdale NSW \nRSVP to permaculturestgeorge@gmail.com

SUMMARY:12 August 2016: Get Down and Dirty
DESCRIPTION:St George Permaculture will be running a practical workshop on evaluating and testing the soil in your own garden.  What an opportunity!  Haven’t you always wondered just how good your soil is and whether you have achieved the right balance with all your hard work of soil enrichment.  This is your chance to test your soil.\n\n \nBring along your own garden soil samples for:\n\n\nevaluation\nsoil type testing\npH testing\ndiscussion and analysis. Discover why some plants thrive and others don’t in seemingly identical growing conditions. \nIf you are worried about lead\, arsenic\, cadmium\, chromium or other contaminant metals present in your vegetable patch\, we will also reveal how to obtain FREE laboratory metals testing of your soil.\n\n\n If we have time we will also briefly discuss and test alternative growing media such as potting mixes & hydroponics.\n\n Soil sampling guidelines:\nYou will need up to 5 sterile plastic bags/glass jars/containers (sufficient for about a tennis-ball sized soill sample) and a garden trowel or similar. Best to sample soil when its not too waterlogged.\n\n\n\nIdentify up to 5 sites in your garden for testing.\nScrape off surface debris/mulch from an area of about 20cm diameter\nCollect soil sample (about a handfull/tennis ball sized\nLabel each sample with something meaningful to you\, i.e “vegie patch near Jack’s fence” “azalea garden – west side”\nBring along your soil samples to Permaculture. This is a practical hands-on night that will enable you to resolve problems in your own garden\, understand your own rhizosphere environment and to manage your soil to its optimal performance. \n\n\nLucky door prize of a pH testing kit or two to take home. Everyone gets to take home some appropriate soil additives – so a value-packed night.\n\nAll members of Permaculture Sydney South are welcome to attend this workshop.  Visitors are welcome at the casual attendance rate of $10 payable at the door.

SUMMARY:8 April 2016: Crop Rotation and Intercropping
DESCRIPTION:St George/Sutherland Permaculture Group will have a presentation on Crop Rotation and Intercropping presented by Nada Malkoc at their monthly meeting on Friday 8 April 2016 commencing at 7 pm. Attending this presentation is one of the benefits of your membership. Visitors are welcome with a $10 entry fee. \nCrop rotation is used to control pests and diseases that can become established in the soil over time. The changing of crops in a sequence tends to decrease the population level of pests. Plants within the same taxonomic family tend to have similar pests and pathogens. \nIntercropping is a multiple cropping practice involving growing two or more crops in proximity. The most common goal of intercropping is to produce a greater yield on a given piece of land by making use of resources that would otherwise not be utilized by a single crop.

SUMMARY:12 February 2016: Transition Towns
DESCRIPTION:On Friday 12 February Loki Ysebaert will be giving a presentation on Transition Towns.  This will commence at 7pm and be held at the Edith Wellington Hall 76 Pitt Street Mortdale. This is the regular monthly meeting for the St George/Sutherland group.  Members from any of our three groups are welcome.   There is a small $10 fee for visitors. \n………..a story of resilience and hope in extraordinary times……… \nWhat is a Transition Initiative? \nIt’s a place where there’s a community-led process that helps that town/village/city/neighbourhood become stronger and happier. These communities have started up projects in areas of food\, transport\, energy\, education\, housing\, waste\, arts etc. as small-scale local responses to the global challenges of climate change\, economic hardship and shrinking supplies of cheap energy. \nWhat are we “transitioning” towards? \nWhether we like it or not\, over the next decade or two\, we’ll be transitioning to a lower energy future – essential because of climate change and inevitable because of diminishing supplies of fossil fuels (particularly oil). There are a variety of possible outcomes depending on whether we stick our heads in the sand or whether we start working for a future that we want. Transition Initiatives\, community by community\, are actively and cooperatively creating happier\, fairer and stronger communities. \nHere’s how it all appears to be evolving \nIt begins when a small group comes together with a shared concern about shrinking supplies of cheap energy (peak oil)\, climate change and increasingly\, economic downturn. This group recognises that: \n\nClimate change and peak oil require urgent action.\nLife with less energy is inevitable\nIndustrial society has lost the resilience to be able to cope with energy shocks.\nWe have to act together\, now.\nInfinite growth within a finite system (such as planet Earth) is impossible.\nIf we plan and act early enough\, and use our creativity and cooperation to unleash the genius within our local communities\, we can build a future far more fulfilling and enriching\, more connected to and more gentle on the Earth\, than the life we have today.

SUMMARY:31 May 2015: Open Garden
DESCRIPTION:True to our word\, Permaeasties are inviting you to a garden. This month it will be at the home of Kerry Dwyer at 2 pm\, Sunday 31st May. It will be less a guided tour and more a discussion about permaculture in the peculiarities of the Eastern Suburbs soil conditions and the micro climate of this valley. This will be an opportunity for us  to share information \, particularly about design.\n\n\nThe front garden is a wild native garden planted on swales (created at a permabee with  Matt Heffernan and his mate Matt seven years ago). These swales  have slowed down the rain which used to take all the sandy soil into the street.  The front garden largely looks after itself.  The back garden has evolved over time to include fruit trees\, a habitat section with frogs and blue tongue lizards \, seasonal vegetables and quite a few flowers. There a few fruit trees in the nature strip – citrus and guava – planted by students during a PDC course four years ago.  I also have a special fire pit used for fire ceremonies.\n\nI will have some afternoon tea for all\, but please feel free to bring a plate.\n\nIf you would like to come along to this garden please reply to dlockrey@optusnet.com.au.  Visitors are welcome for the small fee of $10.00.  There is no cost for members but please reply so we can have some idea of numbers.
