May 9 2023 Building a Thriving School Garden by Patricia Waskiw

Patricia was born on the beautiful south coast and happily remembers holidays with her grandparents here in Sydney. Her Lebanese grandfather had a huge garden block that fed his family and the surrounding Lebanese community, whilst her Scottish grandfather had a more modest, but beautiful veggie and flower garden.  As a young’un, Patricia proudly recalls her father digging her a little plot in their own backyard where she planted her first crop… radishes!

She was always going to be a gardener!

Patricia has been teaching young students for 40 years and is currently teaching at Panania Public School. The school garden there is a thriving and happy place where the students engage in sustainable garden practices during the lunchtime ‘Garden Club’ and also during daily class lessons.
