12 August 2016: Get Down and Dirty

12 August 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

St George Permaculture will be running a practical workshop on evaluating and testing the soil in your own garden.  What an opportunity!  Haven’t you always wondered just how good your soil is and whether you have achieved the right balance with all your hard work of soil enrichment.  This is your chance to test your soil.

Bring along your own garden soil samples for:
  • evaluation
  • soil type testing
  • pH testing
  • discussion and analysis. Discover why some plants thrive and others don’t in seemingly identical growing conditions.
  • If you are worried about lead, arsenic, cadmium, chromium or other contaminant metals present in your vegetable patch, we will also reveal how to obtain FREE laboratory metals testing of your soil.
If we have time we will also briefly discuss and test alternative growing media such as potting mixes & hydroponics.
 Soil sampling guidelines:
You will need up to 5 sterile plastic bags/glass jars/containers (sufficient for about a tennis-ball sized soill sample) and a garden trowel or similar. Best to sample soil when its not too waterlogged.
  1. Identify up to 5 sites in your garden for testing.
  2. Scrape off surface debris/mulch from an area of about 20cm diameter
  3. Collect soil sample (about a handfull/tennis ball sized
  4. Label each sample with something meaningful to you, i.e “vegie patch near Jack’s fence” “azalea garden – west side”
  5. Bring along your soil samples to Permaculture. This is a practical hands-on night that will enable you to resolve problems in your own garden, understand your own rhizosphere environment and to manage your soil to its optimal performance.
Lucky door prize of a pH testing kit or two to take home. Everyone gets to take home some appropriate soil additives – so a value-packed night.
All members of Permaculture Sydney South are welcome to attend this workshop.  Visitors are welcome at the casual attendance rate of $10 payable at the door.
